SRINAGAR, Indian-controlled Kashmir, March 21 (Xinhua) -- At least two policemen and two troopers were killed Wednesday as gunfight entered the second day in restive Indian-controlled Kashmir, police said.

The gunfight broke out Tuesday inside Halmatpora forest area of frontier Kupwara district, about 110 km northwest of Srinagar city, the summer capital of Indian-controlled Kashmir.

"Firing still continues in Kupwara and today two policemen and two troopers were killed in the ongoing operations," Indian army spokesman Col Rajesh Kalia told Xinhua.

On Tuesday four militants were killed in the gunfight and Wednesday's four deaths have pushed the toll to eight.

A senior police official said the forest area was cordoned off by joint contingents of army and police late Tuesday afternoon following intelligence information about presence of militants.

Authorities have rushed additional reinforcements to the forest area to take on militants.

The identity of the slain militants or their group affiliation could not be ascertained so far.

Militant groups are engaged in a guerilla war with Indian troops in the region since 1989. The militants often carry out attacks on police and army in the region.
