YANGON, May 4 (Xinhua) -- Myanmar's Yangon is planning to host international expos in 2019, the official Global New Light of Myanmar reported Friday.

The Yangon region government eyes an 3.24-hectare old jute factory in Bayintnaung area to be converted to an exhibition hall, Yangon Region Chief Minister U Phyo Min Thein told a meeting of the Gems Entrepreneurs Association Thursday.

If exhibitions such as furniture expo and car expo are held once a month besides the gems expo, Yangon's economy is likely to improve through such events which will also boost tourism, he said, welcoming international-level event organizers to take part in the plan.

The chief minister stressed making efforts in the enhancement of the gems sector, voicing readiness to help with government procedures, including getting easier access to visas, ensuring smooth flow of trade and opening of branch offices.

In January this year, Myanmar sponsored an international gems and jewelry fair-2018 in Yangon, which was aimed at bringing about the emergence of a successful international market of the country's finished gems and jewelry.

That fair attracted over 11,000 gems merchants including foreign buyers from 37 countries and regions.

In December last year, Myanmar also held a 10-day regular Mid-Year Jade and Gems Emporium-2017 in Nay Pyi Taw.
