HAVANA, May 5 (Xinhua) -- Cuba on Saturday commemorated the 200th anniversary of the birth of renowned German philosopher Karl Marx, holding a series of cultural and social events.

The Union of Writers and Artists of Cuba (UNEAC) offered a multimedia presentation on Marx's life and enduring legacy that included the opinions of Cuban personalities.

"It's a way to bring Marx to the new generations by presenting his life and work in a digital and interactive format," said Paquita de Armas, a Cuban journalist who put together the presentation.

UNEAC's president, Miguel Barnet, said Marx's ideas are still relevant today in Cuba.

"Even though the socialist revolution has undergone a period of transformation, our main principles remain very close to Marxism," he said.

The Communist Party of Cuba published a special edition of its magazine "Cuba Socialista" dedicated to Marx, whose thinking and treatise on capitalism have gained traction at a time of widespread discontent in the West with the concentration of wealth in the hands of a few.

Cuban media also highlighted the relevance of Marx's ideas to today's world and his influence on this nation's revolutionary founder and longtime leader Fidel Castro.
