RABAT, July 1 (Xinhua) -- Leading Saudi electricity producer, Acwa power, has officially switched on a 120 megawatt wind farm in the northern Morocco, local media reported on Sunday.

The Khalladi Wind Farm is one of the first private renewable energy projects in the country developed under a renewable energy law that allows private producers to sell electricity directly to clients connected to the high voltage and medium voltage grid, most of which are industrial companies.

The plant, built in Mellousa area, Jbel Sendouq, 30 km away from the city of Tangier, is designed to supply energy to private companies in Morocco at a lower tariff, according to the financial news site Medias24.com. It was built by an investment of 170 million U.S. dollars.

Morocco is implementing an ambitious strategy aimed at producing 42 percent of its electrical power from renewable energy by 2020 and 52 percent by 2030.
