SYDNEY, July 5 (Xinhua) -- A giant sea turtle named Wanda has been released outside of Sydney Harbour on Thursday, after spending the last few weeks recovering in hospital suffering from anaemia, parasites and a head injury.

Found washed up at a beach on the New South Wales State's south coast back in May, the wounded reptile was in need of care.

So staff at Sydney's Taronga Wildlife Hospital spent the last seven weeks treating the animal.

"He was very sick," Taronga Zoo senior veterinarian Dr Larry Vogelnest told local media. "But thankfully he recovered quickly."

To find out where Wanda is headed next, wildlife staff equipped an advanced satellite tracker to unlock the secrets of its migration patterns and help in future conservation efforts.

Treating around 40 turtles per year, the hospital is currently tracking 13 turtles using the same technology.
