JERUSALEM, May 8 (Xinhua) -- Israelis on Wednesday joined a nationwide celebration of Israel's Independence Day.

Tens of thousands of Israelis came to the main event at the Rabin Square in Tel Aviv, where the municipality arranged in front of its building music concert and fireworks.

Independence Day is the national day of Israel, celebrating the Israeli declaration of independence in 1948. The Israelis usually mark the day with official and public ceremonies.

The streets, buildings, facilities and cars were decorated with Israeli flags. People walked on the streets wearing the blue and white colors of the Israeli flag.

Like every year, famous singers and dancers performed in city centers across the country.

Israel declared independence on May 14, 1948, though it marks the Independence Day on different dates every year based on the Hebrew calendar.

The Israeli Central Bureau of Statistics released updated figures, saying that on the eve of Israel's 71st Independence Day, the population of Israel reached 9.02 million.

At the time of the establishment of the state, the population of Israel was only around 806,000.
