VIENTIANE, June 25 (Xinhua) -- Lao leaders are reviewing a new draft law on cybersecurity aimed at strengthening national cybersecurity, promoting regional and international digital integration, and protecting critical information infrastructure as well as the personal data of service users.
During the ongoing ninth ordinary session of the Lao National Assembly's ninth legislature, Lao Minister of Technology and Communications, Boviengkham Vongdara, introduced a draft law aimed at strengthening the management, supervision, and protection of national cybersecurity to safeguard national security, public order, and information integrity.
The law aligns with the country's socio-economic goals and international commitments, establishing a framework for managing information, protecting user rights, and improving emergency response, Lao News Agency reported on Wednesday.
Key provisions of the law include preventive measures, emergency response protocols, system recovery guidelines, and regulations for cybersecurity registration and business operations. It defines the rights and responsibilities of registrants, service providers, and users, while enabling effective management and oversight of cybersecurity activities.
The law is expected to empower the Ministry of Technology and Communications and relevant agencies to better protect critical information infrastructure and personal data, encourage domestic and foreign investment in the cybersecurity sector, and enhance national preparedness against cyber threats.
The Lao government is advancing its efforts to integrate technology into public administration and services, while the private sector increasingly moves online. As part of its digital transformation, the government has launched a national strategy focused on building a digital government, digital economy, and digital society. ■
