BRASILIA, July 30 (Xinhua) -- The U.S. decision to impose sanctions on Brazilian Supreme Federal Court (STF) judge Alexandre de Moraes is a "violent and arrogant" measure, Brazilian Minister of Institutional Relations said on Wednesday.

"No nation can interfere in another's judiciary. Solidarity with the judge and the STF," Minister Gleisi Hoffmann wrote on social media platform X, where she also reaffirmed the Brazilian government's "total repudiation" of this "absurdity."

The U.S. government on Wednesday placed De Moraes on its list of individuals sanctioned by the Global Magnitsky Act, a legal instrument that allows the U.S. government to punish foreigners it deems guilty of corruption or serious human rights violations.

Sanctions under the act may include freezing assets in the United States, blocking dollar-based transactions even if conducted outside the United States, and canceling credit cards.

This marks the first time the act has targeted a member of Brazil's Supreme Court.
