BEIRUT, Oct. 12 (Xinhua) -- The UN peacekeeping force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) on Sunday condemned a second Israeli drone attack this month near its troops in southern Lebanon, calling it a serious violation of the UN Security Council resolution.

The UNIFIL said an Israeli drone dropped a grenade near a peacekeeping position in the village of Kafer Kela shortly before noon on Friday, lightly wounding one peacekeeper. Two drones had been spotted near the site earlier, it added.

"This is the second Israel Defense Forces grenade attack on peacekeepers this month," the UNIFIL said. "It is another serious violation of resolution 1701 and shows disregard for the safety of peacekeepers implementing their mandate."

The mission urged Israel to halt attacks on or near UN personnel, who it said are working to restore stability along the border under the Security Council mandate.

The UNIFIL said Israeli drones on Oct. 2 also dropped several grenades near peacekeepers and Lebanese soldiers protecting civilian workers clearing rubble in the border village of Maroun al-Ras.

UNIFIL positions have come under fire several times since cross-border clashes erupted after the Gaza war began in October 2023. The force has accused Israel of targeting its sites, drawing international criticism.

Despite a ceasefire between Israel and Hezbollah, Israel has continued periodic strikes in Lebanon, citing Hezbollah threats, and has maintained border positions after missing a Feb. 18 withdrawal deadline.
