MADRID, Oct. 11 (Xinhua) -- Spain took another step to qualifying for next summer's World Cup finals in the United States, Mexico and Canada with a 2-0 win at home to Georgia on Saturday.
Spain now has three wins with 11 goals scored and none conceded from three games in a group that also contains Türkiye and Bulgaria.
Despite missing several key players, such as Rodri, Lamine Yamal and Nico Williams, Spain dominated the match played in Elche's Martinez Valero Stadium, with the ball hardly out of the visiting team's half.
Mikel Oyarzabal headed over after a smart routine from a corner ended with Pedro Porro's cross from the right.
The opening goal came in the 24th minute when Yeremy Pino scored from close range after Robin Le Normand nodded down Pedri's excellent ball into the Georgia penalty area.
Ferran Torres should have doubled the lead after he was brought down by Georgia's goalkeeper Giorgi Mamardashvili, but saw his spot kick denied.
Spain continued to dominate with Mikel Merino flicking Porro's cross just wide, before clipping just over after his turn in the area left him with the goal at his mercy, and Mamardashvili also blocked a shot from Oyarzabal in the closing moments.
There was no change to the script in the second half, with the Georgia goalkeeper again frustrating Oyarzabal, before Spain hit the woodwork twice in a matter of seconds, with Porro's shot bouncing off the inside of the post and Oyarzabal's follow-up also deflected onto the woodwork.
Oyarzabal finally got his reward in the 64th minute when he smashed home a free kick from the edge of the penalty area. ■
