DALIAN, Oct. 13 (Xinhua) -- The China National Intellectual Property Administration (CNIPA) and the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) on Monday presented awards to Chinese innovators for outstanding patents.

A ceremony to present recipients with the 25th WIPO-CNIPA Award for Chinese Outstanding Patented Invention & Industrial Design took place in the city of Dalian, northeast China's Liaoning Province. A total of 30 inventions and utility models, as well as 10 industrial designs, received gold awards -- China's top honor for patents.

The CNIPA and WIPO selected these 40 patents from a total of 2,900 candidates nominated by various government departments, national industry associations and academicians.

The winning innovations span key areas such as core technological breakthroughs, high-end manufacturing, green and low-carbon initiatives, vaccine development, life sciences and health, and include an advanced glass-production technology, a database transaction-processing method and unmanned aerial vehicles.

Awardees include tech giant Tencent, Chinese NEV pioneer BYD and the Dalian University of Technology.

According to the CNIPA, the cumulative sales revenue of these 40 patented products has exceeded 580 billion yuan (81.7 billion U.S. dollars) to date.

Shen Changyu, head of the CNIPA, said that patent transformation and utilization are crucial driving forces in realizing innovation-driven development, serving as bridges in the conversion of innovative research outcomes into real productive forces.

"The journey of IP in China is the journey of China's modern development," WIPO Director General Daren Tang said in a speech at the ceremony. He also congratulated China for entering the ranks of the top 10 countries on the WIPO's Global Innovation Index this year, and for ranking highest among upper-middle-income economies.
