  1. Pakistan to hold Senate elections in March

    ISLAMABAD, Jan. 29 (Xinhua) -- The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) said on Monday that the elections of Upper House of the Parliament, or the Senate, will be held on March 3.

    According to the ECP schedule, the polling will fill 52 Senate seats which will become vacant on March 11.

    As per the schedule issued by the commission, the candidates can submit their nomination papers on Feb. 4-6 and the scrutiny of the papers will be completed by Feb. 9. The list of candidates after scrutiny will be issued on Feb. 15.

    The tenure of 52 senators from four provinces, Federally Administered Tribal Areas (FATA) and Islamabad is going to expire on March 11 after completion of their six-year term in the upper house of the parliament.

    Of the 52 seats, Punjab and Sindh provinces will have 12 seats each and Balochistan and Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa will have 11 seats respectively. FATA will have four seats and the Islamabad Capital Territory will have two seats.

    Meanwhile, the ECP has also issued notification of appointment of four returning officers and 22 polling officers for conducting Senate elections.

    Pakistan's Senate comprises 104 members in which 23 are from each four provinces, eight from FATA and four from Islamabad.

    The 23 seats allocated for each province consist of 14 general seats, four reserved seats for women, four for technocrats and one for a minority member.
