TEHRAN, June 7 (Xinhua) -- Iranian President Hassan Rouhani called for a mass turnout of Muslims on Quds (Jerusalem) Day rallies this Friday in support of Palestinians, Iran's Foreign Ministry said Thursday.

"Quds Day is a historic day as everybody protests against tyrants and voices support for the oppressed (Palestinian) people who have been displaced from their homes for 70 years," Rouhani said.

Besides decrying the occupation, the rallies this Friday should also target the recent relocation of the U.S. embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem and condemn the killing of Palestinian protesters by Israel over the past months, he said.

Meanwhile, Iran's Foreign Ministry urged all Muslims around the world to attend the international Quds Day rallies on Friday.

In a statement issued on Thursday, the ministry called for Muslim unity against what it called Israel's "war crimes and crimes against humanity in the occupied territories."

This year's Quds Day has turned into one of the most sensitive periods in history, the statement said.

Quds Day, an annual event falls on June 8 this year, is observed on the last Friday of the Muslim holy month of Ramadan in Iran, along with several Arab countries, to express support for the Palestinians.
