ISTANBUL, June 24 (Xinhua) -- Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan on Sunday night declared his victory in a live broadcast on TV, citing unofficial preliminary results of the elections.

"Our nation has given us the duty of presidency and the head of the executive branch," Erdogan said in Istanbul.

The president also noted that the People's Alliance of the ruling Justice and Development Party and the Nationalist Movement Party has gained the majority in the parliament.

"The message is clear: Turkey has given a lesson on democracy with a turnout that is close to 90 percent," he remarked.

According to state-run Anadolu Agency, Erdogan has 52.68 percent of votes while his main rival Muharrem Ince, candidate of the Republican People's Party (CHP), gained 30.75 percent in the presidential race.

The report also revealed that the People's Alliance heads with 53.68 percent of votes in the parliament elections while the Nation Alliance, made up of the main opposition CHP, the center-right Good Party and the conservative Felicity Party, won 34.13 percent.
