SKOPJE, Sept. 17 (Xinhua) -- U.S. Defense Secretary James Mattis, who was on an official visit to Macedonia, met on Monday with Macedonian leaders and officials, including President Gjorge Ivanov.

President Ivanov said during his official meeting with Mattis that NATO and European Union (EU) membership continue to be the main strategic goals and priorities for Macedonia.

According to the president, the membership will contribute to the progress and prosperity of the entire region.

Ivanov and Mattis also discussed the bilateral cooperation in the sphere of defense and security during their meeting, says a press release by Macedonia's President office.

Ivanov thanked the U.S. Defence Secretary for the U.S. support to Macedonia, which aims to promote the defense and security reforms both in terms of financial and technical support through participation in joint training, exercises and missions.

"Although we are not a NATO member, our army is NATO compatible and for that we are thankful to the U.S.," underlined Ivanov.

According to Ivanov, Macedonia's long-term interest is to intensify and improve the overall bilateral relations with the U.S.

The two also exchanged views and opinions on the challenges and expectations for the future of the Southeast European region, says the press release.

Mattis also held meetings with Macedonian Prime Minister Zoran Zaev and Defense Minister Radmila Sekerinska.
