MONTEVIDEO, Sep. 19 (Xinhua) -- Uruguay's long-serving national football coach Oscar Tabarez will be honored with a life-size sculpture in his home city of Montevideo.

The statue will adorn the Uruguayan capital's waterfront esplanade, with the plans "to be made concrete" by the end of the year, Montevideo mayor Daniel Martinez said in a Twitter post on Wednesday

It will be created by local sculptor Alberto Morales Saravia, whose previous work includes a statue of Uruguay and Barcelona forward Luis Suarez in the city of Salto.

Tabarez has been in charge of Uruguay since 2006 and guided the team to the quarterfinals of this year's World Cup in Russia, where they were eliminated by eventual champions France. He also coached the Celeste from 1988 to 1990.

In total, the 71-year-old has guided Uruguay to four World Cups during his two spells as coach: Italy in 2010, South Africa in 2010, Brazil in 2014 and Russia in 2018.

He is currently negotiating a new contract with the Uruguayan Football Association following the expiry of his previous deal in July.
