HAIKOU, Jan. 22 (Xinhua) -- The city of Haikou, capital of China's tropical island province Hainan, on Tuesday stopped issuing online ride-hailing licenses for fuel-powered vehicles, said local authorities.

All the new and replaced vehicles in the city's online ride-hailing fleet will be powered by clean energy this year, according to the city's transportation, port and shipping administration bureau.

Currently, Haikou has registered 7,343 online ride-hailing vehicles, but only about 5 percent of them, or 390 vehicles, are using new energy.

Hainan plans to have all its vehicles run on new energy by 2030 to promote green development.

The island has more than 9 million people and about 1.18 million vehicles. It plans to introduce 5,600 new energy vehicles into the market and build more than 10,000 recharging posts this year.
