WINDHOEK, Feb. 21 (Xinhua) -- Top Namibian cyclist Michelle Vorster, winner of the 2018 Elite Woman's Nedbank Cycle Challenge, will once again compete at this year's edition of the tournament on Sunday, according to Nedbank Namibia.

The 2019 Nedbank Mountain Bike (MTB) Challenge will coincide with the Elite Men and Women MTB National Marathon Championship.

Speaking in the capital on Wednesday, Vorster said she is excited about a new route introduced for the 2019 competition, which she described as both technical and challenging.

"I had an opportunity to scout portions of the route and it is definitely worthy of a Nationals route as it is tough, challenging, and technical. Whoever comes out tops will be a worthy national champion," she said.

Vorster has represented Namibia internationally, and has commended the Nedbank Cycle Challenge for contributing towards her cycling career, saying her first race was an unforgettable experience "as it left a positive mark in my cycling career. For me this race is like preparing for the World Championships."

Mountain bike cycling in Namibia has seen a growth in interest over the years with more and more people participating in the mountain bike leg of the Nedbank Cycle Challenge, she added.

"People are becoming aware of the freedom you experience on the bike and the vast possibility of exploring so many beautiful places. But what we enjoy about it is that the whole family can jump on a bike and have fun, be fit and explore. Racing is just part of that fun. Also, I think technological advances have a great part to play to make mountain biking more comfortable, safe and enjoyable," Vorster said.

The Nedbank Cycle Challenge MTB edition comes hot off the heels of its annual Road Challenge, and will also coincide with a Kids Challenge that will take place on Saturday.
