LIMA, March 1 (Xinhua) -- No damage or injuries were reported from the 7.0-magnitude earthquake that struck southern Peru early Friday, the National Institute of Civil Defense (Indeci) confirmed.

So far, the only damage reported are rocks that have fallen on some lines of communication, it said.

It recommended that in the event of an earthquake, people should "remain calm and avoid panicking."

"In addition, a family evacuation plan should be prepared and exit routes verified. It is also necessary to locate both internal and external safe zones," the Peruvian institution said.

The earthquake struck at 3:50 a.m. local time (0850 GMT), some eight kilometers northwest of the Azangaro town in the southern Peruvian department of Puno, with a depth of 270 kilometers, according to a report from the Geophysical Institute of Peru.

The National Emergency Operations Center is also monitoring other Peruvian provinces and is coordinating actions with local civil defense authorities to determine possible damages.

The quake was also felt in some parts of the Bolivian city of La Paz, the Bolivia's Observatory of San Calixto said on Friday.

Peru is located in the area called the Pacific Ring of Fire, where about 85 percent of the world's seismic activities are recorded.
