COLOMBO, March 27 (Xinhua) -- Sri Lanka's national air carrier, SriLankan Airlines, said on Wednesday it is increasing its number of flights to Tokyo's Narita International Airport to five per week.

A statement from the airlines said that the SriLankan Airlines is the only airlines to operate non-stop flights from Tokyo to Colombo and it provides swift onward connections to cities in south India and the Maldives which are popular destinations among Japanese travelers.

The added frequency will also facilitate Sri Lankan and south Indian travelers to Japan, which is hosting two major global sporting events -- the 2019 Rugby World Cup and the 2020 Tokyo Olympic and Paralympic Games, the statement said.

The SriLankan Airlines currently operates four flights to Narita a week on Mondays, Thursdays, Saturdays and Sundays.

The fifth frequency, which will commence from July 16, and will depart for Narita every Tuesdays.

The national carrier said it has deployed Airbus 330-300 fleet on the Narita-Colombo sector.
