LONDON, April 10 (Xinhua) -- British Prime Minister Theresa May was due in Brussels on Wednesday afternoon in a bid to get green light from the European Union (EU) for her request to delay Brexit until June 30.

EU leaders are to hold an emergency summit in Brussels to decide whether to offer Britain another Brexit extension.

Britain is currently due to leave the EU at 23:00 BST on April 12. If no extension is granted, the default position would be for the UK to leave this Friday without a deal.

The British Parliament has so far rejected May's Brexit deal three times since January.

May hopes to postpone the date the UK leaves the EU beyond this Friday, until June 30. The Brexit date was previously pushed back from March 29 to April 12.

May held talks with German Chancellor Angela Merkel and French President Emmanuel Macron on Tuesday to ask for Brexit breathing space.

Previously, May faced opposition Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn during Prime Minister's Questions in the House of Commons.

That head-to-head followed five days of talks between the government and Labour officials aimed at breaking the Brexit impasse. However, the cross-party talks led to no breakthrough.

The EU is expected to offer a longer delay, after European Council President Donald Tusk has urged the 27 leaders to back a flexible extension of up to a year, with conditions attached.
