NEW DELHI, April 15 (Xinhua) -- India's Supreme Court Monday ordered the country's election commission to watch biopic of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and then decide whether the movie should be blocked, officials said.

The top court asked the poll panel to give its view to the court by April 22 in a sealed cover.

"The Supreme Court today asked Election Commission of India (ECI) to watch 'PM Narendra Modi' a biopic and then take a call on whether it should be banned," an official said.

Last week ECI stopped release of the biopic for the duration of general elections, following which makers of the film approached the Supreme Court.

The election body in its statement blocking release of film said that any material disturbing the level playing field in favor of any political party or individual should not be displayed.

"That any poster or publicity material concerning any such certified content, which either depicts a candidate (including prospective) for the furtherance (or purported to further) of electoral prospect, directly or indirectly, shall not be put to display in electronic media in the area where MCC (Model Code of Conduct) is in operation," reads the ECI order.

First phase of the India's general elections was held last week and remaining six phases would be completed until May 20. Counting of votes is scheduled on May 23.
