WASHINGTON, May 2 (Xinhua) -- U.S. President Donald Trump's pick of Kelly Craft to serve as the U.S. representative to the United Nations (UN) has been sent Thursday to the Senate for confirmation.

In a statement listing seven nominations sent to the Senate, the White House noted Kelly Craft, who is "to be the Representative of the United States of America to the United Nations, with the rank and status of Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary, and the Representative of the United States of America in the Security Council of the United Nations."

On Feb. 22, Trump announced that he chose Craft, who was then the U.S. ambassador to Canada, to succeed Nikki Haley as the next U.S. envoy to the UN.

The State Department said Craft has been holding her current position since August 2017, and she served as an alternate delegate to the UN General Assembly in 2007 under the George W. Bush administration.

According to media reports, Craft and her husband were major contributors to Trump's 2016 presidential campaign and donated to his inaugural committee.

Craft is not Trump's first choice to be the next U.S. ambassador to the UN. Trump last December nominated State Department spokesperson Heather Nauert to replace Haley, who left her post at the end of 2018.

The former FOX News presenter, however, withdrew herself from consideration for the nomination later, citing family reasons.
